Breathe Better, Feel Better: The Power of Coherent Breathing

Have you ever paused to notice how you’re breathing right now?

Our breath is always with us, yet most of the time, it goes unnoticed—until we learn how to breathe with awareness. One of the most powerful and accessible techniques I teach in my Meditation and Breathwork sessions is called Coherent Breathing.

What is Coherent Breathing?

Coherent Breathing is a gentle breathwork practice that regulates your nervous system by bringing your breath into a slow, even rhythm—typically around 5 to 6 breaths per minute. This rhythm helps synchronise your heart, lungs, and brain into a state of balance and calm.

Origins

This method draws from ancient yogic and meditative breathing techniques and has been refined by modern researchers like Stephen Elliott and Dr. Richard Gevirtz. It’s now widely used in therapeutic, meditative, and even clinical settings.

Why practice it?

Because it works.

Benefits include:

• Activating the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest-and-digest mode)

• Increasing heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of resilience and well-being

• Supporting emotional regulation and focus

• Reducing anxiety and promoting deep relaxation

Try it now:

1. Start by counting how many breaths you take in one minute. Set a timer and just breathe naturally counting each cycle (inhale and exhale count as one).

3. Afterward, count your breaths again.
